I find the "Radical" Alien Fanboy argument dangerous

I was just looking up Prometheus on IMBD, and what I discovered there in some of the discussion really disturbed me.

Someone was hoping that Prometheus, being a technical prequel to Alien, would acknowledge some of Cameron's Aliens canon as well as the Alien canon. But, the poster was trashed by what I call "Radical Alien Fanboys", who said that they hope that Prometheus would disregard ALL Alien sequel Canon (Aliens, Alien 3, Alien Resurrection).

Now, I can understand Alien Resurrection, but Aliens and Alien 3? Alien 3 is a hot contention of debate, I know, but "destroying" the Aliens Universe would be a terrible move. Aliens launched the series into new heights of popularity, and spawned many games, books, and comics based off of it. Without Aliens, we wouldn't have this game.

Loving Alien more than Aliens is fine and good (I prefer Aliens, but that's me), but to completely disregard Aliens (and to an extent Alien 3) with Prometheus as a device to "stick it to Cameron" is a foolishly childish idea and belief that is more destructive than constructive to the franchise.

Sorry, that's my little rant for the day.

I agree with you all the way! If you take this arguement to the extreme, the "Director's Cut" Alien wrecked its own canon AND Aliens canon, with the scene of Dallas being plastered to the inside of the Nostromo, with an alien (presumably) in his chest. (From what egg?)

"Please, kill me!"

I saw that in the theater, and thought it was awesome and added to the story. I remember reading they cut that "Dallas" scene, because so many people walked out of the theater (the ones who didn't walk out of the chestburster scene) from the "test" audience, in 1979. HA!

I have a feeling Prometheus will fit nicely into all three films.

On a side note, I DO NOT try to fit those dog AVP sequels into the Alien universe. Although I enjoyed them on their own.

Guirec is just a Grunt (no offence)
AvP movies exist in the canon of tomfoolery, and nowhere else. They don't even sync up properly with Alien 3 (the Bishop in A3 was human if you watch the extended version).

Yea. I agree. Don't get me wrong, I love really good sci-fi, but sometimes tomfoolery is OK on a Saturday afternoon channel surfing, with nothin' much to do and you just need a little brain numbing stupidity. And a beer. Or perhaps the Mecum auto auction show or that ridiculous truck show on Spike. You know, the one where they put $40,000 into a '77 Ford pick-up? Like we all have that kind of time and money on our hands. So I'll usually toggle between that crap and AVP Requiem.

I too often treat the AvP films as apocryphal; a fun spin off, no more or less. Same with the games and written material. Prometheus is definitely supposed to take place in the same universe as something of a prequel and so by all intents and purposes is "canon" being that it is the same medium and made by the authoring studio (not to mention the original director). While I see the point of fans instituting their own "fanon" in their own minds by adding or subtracting from the franchise, "fanon" cannot in anyway be deemed more official so to speak then licensed material or the films. Really it is all fiction though and so one's mileage will vary. I find the idea of a "true" fan quite childish even for internet dweebs that post on the IMDB site. Then again the word "fan" is somewhat slang for "fanatic" so maybe they are "true fans".

Well articulated. I'm with you 100%. And I really enjoy material like the Dark Horse Alien comics, etc. Some folks out there have true fan passion for the Alien universe. Like myself. In high school, I won a small award for my pencil drawing of the chestburster busting through Kane's body, as he writhe on the dining table. 1980. Wow. I'm old. And still a fan.

I've been waiting a long time for a film like this. I wonder If the derelict ship is alive somehow, or reaches a simlar state when one of those bald ugly dudes, now the engineers, becomes one with the chair. Total Giger-ish, like the old good times.

Of course radical fanboys from each side are not a good thing, but It is true that Cameron didn't start anything here; perhaps this Scott's film is in owe of O'Bannon and Shusett, true fathers of the original script.

Can't wait to see how those canisters are supposed to grow into eggs somehow.

In my mind, the AVP movies don't exist.

Whatever gives you inner peace my friend.

Yeah I am excited but also a little nervous about how Prometheus is going to change the "Alien" lore. Still I am more optimistic then pessimistic with Ridley Scott at the helm.
