There is no Alien Prequel anymore.

Alien prequel morphs into Prometheus

If you’re like me — and I know I am — you’ve been waiting impatiently for Ridley Scott’s long-planned prequel to his first, 1979 Alien movie. There are tons of questions I’m sure

we’d all love to have answered. For instance, who was that dead, mummified extraterrestrial that the crew of the Nostromo discover on the bridge of that giant derelict space craft at the beginning of the movie? How did that first killer alien find its way onto that marooned ship? And how long had those eggs been waiting to get hatched?

Well, PopWatchers, looks like we’ll be waiting a while longer. Fox announced today that the project once known as “The Alien Prequel” has morphed into something else entirely — a film called Prometheus, slated for release March 9, 2012. The script, written by Scott and Damon Lindelof, will tell a completely different science fiction tale. “While Alien was indeed the jumping off point for this project, out of the creative process evolved a new, grand mythology and universe in which this original story takes place,” Scott explains in the press release. “The keen fan will recognize strands of Alien’s DNA, so to speak, but the ideas tackled in this film are unique, large and provocative.” Swedish actress Noomi Rapace (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) is already attached to star in one of the film’s five major roles, a “scientist” named Elizabeth Shaw.

I don’t know about you, but I’m a little disappointed. Sure, I’ll go see Prometheus, just as I’ve bought tickets to every movie this director has made (even that terrible Russell Crowe romantic comedy, A Good Year). And the movie will undoubtably be just great. But I’m still convinced there’s an edge-of-your-seat story to be told about the origin of the original face-sucking alien. It’s a film Ridley Scott should still make. But what do you think, Pop Watchers? Are you keen to see Prometheus, given that its premise somehow convinced Fox to be cool with Scott not doing an Alien prequel? Or do you just wanna know what the deal is already with that giant mummified extraterrestrial thing from the first Alien movie?
'Alien' prequel morphs into 'Prometheus.' We can't help but be a little disappointed. | PopWatch | EW.com

In other words, THERE IS NO ALIEN PREQUEL.

But that's okay. Us Aliens fans are used to getting fucked over.

After all the really disheartening info that has been recently appearing on the net about the prequel, I'm actually glad to hear he will not be doing It eventually. I'm sure the main deal behind such decision (apart from what Scott himself tells us in that article about a new idea that popped up in his mind while thinking on the prequel) is the retards at Fox themselves who wanted to screw his film by rating It 16 among other things (and dramatically cutting the budget Scott asked for), thing that Scott obviously will not tolerate by any means, and sure prefers not to do the prequel before releasing a Foxed film and screw all the magic he created in 1979 along with O'Bannon, Shusset and the mastermind behind the alien, Hans R. Giger.

Honour to Sir Scott!!

I was excited to learn about the origin of the aliens, but like musta said, fox put too many restrictions on scott and I don't think it would have turned out good! I can't wait to learn more about this new movie and hopefully it can be a big time hit!

Good point Musta.

While I am a bit disappointed by the cancellation of the prequel it had a troubled beginning due to Fox Studio's idiotic meddling with the rating, leaner budget, etc. As I mentioned over at AvP Galaxy's forums, I am glad that it is not a total loss and some the ideas for the prequel have led to a whole new idea. Hopefully Ridley Scott's return to science fiction will be a magnum opus and not a dud (yes even Ridley has a few of those).

Another piece of silver lining to this news is that there is no excuse for SEGA to hold back the release of Aliens: Colonial Marines in anticipation of a new "Alien" movie.

I agree with you. And I hope it will be spectacular for Ridley and the whole Alien universe. I think he may yet delve into the "Space Jockey" mystery, in this movie. Might be cool to go in a different direction with the ideas. That's what I liked about some of the Dark Horse comic stories and even some cool fan-fiction. I know one thing: after the whole AvP II movie, I'm either ready to go back to LB 426 with Cameron, or move on into another direction.

I'm gonna go watch this new prometheus thing the very day of Its release. It is also aimed to the fans of the first film, and If Giger is really behind the new creatures then this is gonna be so sweet because the new aliens wont be bugs but scary bio-mechanical things with real grim intentions, just like the first alien = big win!

And I'm glad that the SJ continues beign a mystery; a non-foxed/independent project faaaaar far away from Fox retardation is really needed to create a film based on this, with 30 years of speculation in the air and all the damage made to the franchise since A:R

Well at least he's not going to make a crappy cash-out like they did with AvP:R. I just can't seem to enjoy that movie for more than a few minutes. Althought the sewer fight was decent.
