IDK it will be interesting to see what scott does. He does like to use rubber suits and says that he will be using them, but then again with such a large creature, I think they may have to resort to some CGI and some of the mechanics that were used to make the queen alien. It will interesting to see what scott does.

The alien queen was a puppet too, and look how good they did when showing that big fucking bitch on screen without CGI. That combined with the outstanding breath sounds lead the guy behind Its design to be awarded an Oscar, pretty much deserved Oscar If you ask me, and all of this without using CGI.
The alien was a 2'50 meters tall monstrosity, and our "little" Bolaji Badejo boy was a + 2'00 meters tall dude; even then, Scott was successful in giving us the impression of the alien beign that tall, and all thanks to those weird camera angles Scott was so fond of, at least when he was younger than he is now... In "aliens", It was impossible to give that feeling of the aliens beign as tall as the first monster for obvious reason, lots of dudes into their respective rubber suits running toward the marine boys was hard enough for the dudes inside the suits heheh. In any case, most of them were 1'85- 1'95 meters tall gymnasts, I mean, they were very tall too ![]() The only scene where Cameron could make the alien feel almost as tall as the first one (I repeat, almost)was the one when little Newt gets abducted; that warrior rising behin her was a truly fearsome one, or maybe Newt's little size kind of deceived us about the warrior's height... In short, look at what Scott achieved by using those weird camera angles and without unnecessary CGI. CGI aliens lack the scary factor of the first one, so we need a man in a suit to achieve that again. The actual problem is the people who want to see a man in a suit instead of an alien, but well that's their problem in the end. What I'm sure is that CGI has served only to make the aliens jumping, wall-walking on the ceiling and make them a lot more agile than first monster, but that didn't actually serve to make them scary..., the outcome was pretty much the opposite, I mean they even look smaller, and If you let me say It, weaklings compared to the first one just because of the constant abuse of the wall-walking, or the walk on the ceilings. That combined with the perception you get of the creatures NOT BEIGN really there leads us to an inevitable fail when It comes to the scary factor. Last edited by Mustafuck; 11-30-2010 at 09:13 AM. |

There is a lot to be said about interaction too.
Fact: You cannot interact with something that is not there. Therefore, CGI breaks immersion.

I agree with you all that CGI needs to be used much more sparingly. Yet I don't see too much cause for alarm as all the 'Alien' films relied heavily on suit action and with mordern animatronics in the mix, it will look even more real. CGI should not be underestimated as an important part of modern special effects. Yet it is just used way to much in order to cut corners. Filmakers today are somewhat spoiled by such advances in computer models and tend to use it even if it detracts from the physicality of the scene.

Some CGI is done really well. I think people are just put off by how the Aliens have been portrayed by CGI in the AvP movies.

I would use CGI to make the environmental effects, some other elements of the atmosphere, the clasic fog effects, lighting, etc.
Just like Mother said about characters and, why not, objects or anything you can interact with: Quote:
