Aliens: Colonial Marines is a “true sequel” to Aliens

For Aliens fans disappointed by Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection, a direct sequel to James Cameron’s artillery-heavy 1986 classic is in the works. In game form.

New first-person shooter Aliens: Colonial Marines is due for release in Spring 2012, and has been created by Gearbox Software as a direct follow-up to Aliens.

“We’ve called this a true sequel to Aliens before,” says Gearbox co-founder Randy Pitchford.

“The correct way to view it is, Alien 3 may be a truer sequel to Alien in that it is all about tension, whereas this is a game about a badass squad kicking ass and also dealing with the fact that the aliens are going to kick their ass back.”

Gearbox have called in the big guns for the game, having hired Battlestar Galactica writers Bradley Thompson and David Weddle to flesh out its storyline.

They’ve not completely ignored Alien 3, though, instead tailoring their playable sequel as able to fit into the franchise’s existing canon.

“We had to commit ourselves to Alien 3 being part of the canon and I’m glad we did,” says Pitchford. “I know we all loved Aliens so much; we wanted that experience to be the next film.

“I have to be thankful that it wasn’t because that’s fundamentally why our opportunity exists today - if that itch had been scratched already we wouldn’t even be here. It’s because the itch was never scratched that we not only get to scratch it now, but we do it in a videogame.

“There are some contradictions between Aliens and Alien 3 and we’ve actually taken those contradictions as an opportunity and challenged ourselves to solve them.”

who are the fans dissapointed with alien3?, sometimes one is lead to think that everything should have continued the way Cameron's made his sequel, when in fact everything was very different when It started, specially the very creature. Let's just play a game based on Cameron's in-vision of the franchise and enjoy it the way It is, but also, we shouldn't forget that Cameron didn't invent/start anything here..., he was just the second, and Fincher the thrid and last one.

Hope Scott's Prometheus puts an end to all of this once and for all. 26 years of Cameron-itis plaguing the whole franchise have been more than enough imho. Let's enjoy Cameron's lore in A:CM and then next year back to the roots..., at last.

btw I hope we get to see some new media soon enough..., It feels like a fucking while already since E3

Personally I really enjoyed Alien 3. It wasn't as good as Alien or Aliens, but that doesn't mean it was bad.

Alien 3 was my girlfriend's favorite. I think a lot of people enjoy the prison element.

I agree, it had very good moments, my favriot was when Ripley sacrificed herself to kill the Queen embryo.
and the Bambi burster scene.
Alien3 was great, its Alien Reserrection however that I kinda disliked. I think Ripley should be cloned and the aliens should have escaped, but Ripley shouldnt be part Alien and have super powers.
it reminded me too much like Resident evil 3 and 4.
but back to the point, I do love Alien 3 for its Dark and ambient story...

I was quite disappointed with alien 3, but nowhere near as much as resurrection!!! But that being said, I feel that they should have followed the novels as they were a quality read!!!
Would recommend them to everyone!!

I have to admit that I was very dissapointed in Alien 3, not that it was a horrible movie but I read the book before I saw the film and litterally couldn't believe that they killed Newt, Hicks and more or less Bishop right at the start. I had to re-read the first couple of chapters, since I couldn't believe what I was reading.

Just seems to me there was so much more that could have been done with those characters, the whole surrogate mother relationship could have been explored between Ripley and Newt and the actress playing Newt would obviously have aged about 4 years but could have been explained with a fault in here cryo tube or something? I dunno, to me it just went wrong after Aliens but nothing beats the original Alien IMO.

Carrie Henn was pretty much done with movies after Aliens, but I don't think her death had much to do with that. It was just sloppy/rushed/hackneyed writing.

It's the toughest pill to swallow about the movie, but in my eyes, I came to accept it because it was so sudden and unexplained...and death is like that. It isn't always the logical, digestible, entertaining arc that Hollywood presents, and I think Sigourney Weaver acted that shock and acceptance well.

I too disliked the fact that both Hicks and Newt were killed off so quickly in Alien 3 after being built up in the previous film. Yet in a way this reinforces Ripley's role within the saga and makes her fate in the third film all the more moving. Sigourney Weaver did an amazing job in Alien 3 showing her heartbreak that gives way to her steely resolve once again but she never comes across as a superhero but a tragic hero that is so human.
