Aliens: Colonial Marines is a “true sequel” to Aliens

For Aliens fans disappointed by Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection, a direct sequel to James Cameron’s artillery-heavy 1986 classic is in the works. In game form.

New first-person shooter Aliens: Colonial Marines is due for release in Spring 2012, and has been created by Gearbox Software as a direct follow-up to Aliens.

“We’ve called this a true sequel to Aliens before,” says Gearbox co-founder Randy Pitchford.

“The correct way to view it is, Alien 3 may be a truer sequel to Alien in that it is all about tension, whereas this is a game about a badass squad kicking ass and also dealing with the fact that the aliens are going to kick their ass back.”

Gearbox have called in the big guns for the game, having hired Battlestar Galactica writers Bradley Thompson and David Weddle to flesh out its storyline.

They’ve not completely ignored Alien 3, though, instead tailoring their playable sequel as able to fit into the franchise’s existing canon.

“We had to commit ourselves to Alien 3 being part of the canon and I’m glad we did,” says Pitchford. “I know we all loved Aliens so much; we wanted that experience to be the next film.

“I have to be thankful that it wasn’t because that’s fundamentally why our opportunity exists today - if that itch had been scratched already we wouldn’t even be here. It’s because the itch was never scratched that we not only get to scratch it now, but we do it in a videogame.

“There are some contradictions between Aliens and Alien 3 and we’ve actually taken those contradictions as an opportunity and challenged ourselves to solve them.”

I never understood what the problem was in dropping Hicks and Newt from Alien3, and I don't think I ever will to be honest.

I just think they missed an opertunity to do something better with the characters, they survived "Aliens" for nothing, they went through all that and then died in their sleep in the first 5 minutes of "Alien 3".

Not entirely for nothing. Their loss is an integral part of Ripley's final character arc.

Would you feel the same way if they had died halfway through 3? Probably not, because it would have been more entertaining. But the effect on Ripley's character arc and the overall story is largely the same. Death is unexpected and tragic and inconvenient.

I don't know. I just see style and well doing all over alien3. It is a beautiful film that was indeed smashed to the wall by quite a considerable part of the people who wanted more of "Aliens" in alien3.

Only the scenes like when the runner when Ripley fiinds It underground or when the being is on Its two shortly before It falls into the trap at the leadworks, the infirmary, all of them are worth the alien legacy. The runner was a very creepy type of alien when put on screen with animatronics only, and with Fincher's style which was of corse crucial part here to achieve that. He truly knew how to make an alien film, and most important, how to put the creature on screen, something not all directors can actually do the way It must be done

Fincher's doing on the runner and in the entire film deserved more recognition imo.

To me, alien3 was the end of the series. Now time to continue with Prometheus, next step on the franchise since 1992. It's been a while already hehe

Ha, the trick to properly putting an Alien on film is to not put it on film very often.

Its a real shame that the game got fuck delayed again man. I was really hoping to be playing the game and commenting on It with everybody by april or late may rather than talking about alien3; but It's ok anyway cause after all, and again on topic, It's been GB who dropped the bomb somehow after saying the "this is the true sequel" phrase. They should have known that making such comment may be touchy for many, so either they didn't take this into account or It was made on purpose because they're indeed targeting the hardcore cameron fans..., only?
