No, I mean 6 playable characters in the SP version of campaign, and only 5 playable in the coop version of campaign. (Yeah its odd numbers depending on player numbers, but thats for a diffierent topic). The early previews like PSW and GI were saying; throughout the campaign you will get to control 6 different characters at various points in the story. (SP)
The latter previews which I think were sometimes written from the old previews, probably confused that with the squad numbers.

Each mission will put you in the space armor of a different marine in the six-man squad.

In other words, there are only ever four members in your squad during gameplay. But there are actually six different members of that squad that you will control over the course of the campaign.
Confused yet?
Well there is also this from Xhan’s summary of the dec gamepro magazine preview:

The only new weapon that was mentioned is a "grenade launcher", though the article started said premise with "including weapons not seen in the movies"
The story will apparently encompass three distinct arcs/locations, further subdivided into chapters. [Seems a tad light on locations]
Co-op is drop in - drop out.
No new pictures.

Haha, either they’re constantly iterating the design, or there is some seriously bad games journalism going on.
