Me too, but how far could it have been? It was within range of that off road junker that Newt's parents were driving. In that terrain it's hard to assume that it was more than a hundred miles out, unless a lot more time elapsed on that trip than we assume (actually, I guess there is some flexibility there).

I always just assumed the derelict was really damn sturdy and took the blast without many ill effects.

It was also a space-faring vessel and capable of surviving in the void and assummed, interstellar travel. I think it's not too much of a stretch to think a spaceship built by an unknown, yet technically superior, civilisation, would survive.

Yeah I think similarly. It took the Jorden family one week to reach the ship, so we can assume that is hundreds and hundreds of kilometers away from the colony (add how hard the terrain conditions were). The nuclear blast had an area of effect of around 40KM. Also remember the incredible ammount of mountains and mountain chains in that moon. One of the images in "Alien" of the crashed ship says It all, I mean, the ship was in fact resting in the middle of a mountain chain, and that means total protection against any nuke blast, though I insist the ship was too far away from the range of any nuke blast taking place at HH.

Anyway, the hull of the ship seemed to have been breached by volcanic activity bellow It (the Acheron moon wa obviously a young planetoid), which means the ship was not immune to damage.

I wasn't aware of this. Do recall where you heard it? The movie's pacing makes it seem like less time, and the movie's novelization didn't specify it (and was also full of some inconsistencies). Also, the embryo within Newt's father should have hatched in under a week, no? Unless he was packing the queen (which took a few days in Alien 3 to hatch, right? Seemed less than a week).

Either way, I think we can agree that it is fully plausible that the derelict survived the blast, and there shouldn't be much left of Hadley's Hope except dust.

This news to me that the derelict space craft was that faraway, if that was so, wouldn't that mean that during the hurried trip back, that the alien would have gestated long enough and burst out?

That's what I was thinking, too, but Alien 3 established that the queen takes at least a few days to pop...

Ah, yes then it was a queen alien that was the first one. If that was so. I also heard that a normal drone or warrior can become a queen if necessary

I've always been iffy on that one, because why wouldn't the original Alien have been working up to Queen? Why would queens even need to be "queens" while larval, if they are gonna just turn into queens when needed they would all be the same in the larval stage.

I kind of like how AvP 2010 handled it...there was something undefined and "special" about drone number 6, that was never specified...and it eventually became a queen after who-knows-how long of a metamorphic transition period...and the death of her mother.
