[New User] PS3 Controls?

Hello everyone! I am new here, but am a huge ALIEN fan! (Both my Mom and I)

Anyway, I plan on getting this on PS3 but am worried about one thing, the controls.

I have been checking out (online) past Gearbox titles and have noticed they use L2/R2 for aiming and firing. In short I have a rare form of muscular distrophy, so I am very weak, also I have small hands so using L2/R2 is difficult. Do you think that Gearbox will do the same with Aliens: Colonial Marines?

I wish that game developers would realise that the PS3 triggers are NOT like the XBOX 360 triggers, and that when they map the main buttons akin to the 360, it looks (and feels) like a direct port, and we all know how well that goes over.

I am not familiar with Gearboxs other titles, like Borderlands or Brothers in Arms: Hells Highway(or the upcoming Duke Nukem Forever), So I don't know if theres an option to switch the L2/R2 buttons with L1/R1, but my guess is probably not, (Could someone verify this please?) I know Rockstar added a patch to Red Dead Redemption to switch L2/R2 to L1/R1, which was awesome.

I am planning on picking up Aliens VS Predator as a filler but the fact it uses L2/R2 has me sitting on the fence a little. I realise its not very popular for Aliens fans, but SOME Aliens is better than NO Aliens, right?

I suspect we'll be hearing more about Aliens: Colonial Marines after Duke Nukem Forever releases in June.

Anyway, thats all I wanted to ask/say for now. I look forward to participating in this community in the future!

**EDIT**

I shot Gearbox an email and about 45 minutes later, I got a reply!
Heres what I sent:
Hello, I have a couple questions about the upcoming "Aliens: Colonial Marines" game you are developing. Surely by this time the control scheme for both PS3 and 360 versions are likely set, but I would simply like to know if the Aim and Fire buttons will be L1/R1, or have the option to switch them to L1/R1 on the PS3 version. I have a rare form of Muscular Distrophy so using L2/R2 is quite difficult, and I would hate to miss out on a very co-op friendly game based on my favourite movie franchise. Also many other PS3 players with normal abilities prefer using L1/R1 for shooter games, so I know I'm not alone. My final question is when can we expect any kind of new information on the game? Last we've heard is "in a couple months" at the beginning of the year, and we're pushing April now haha. Thanks for your time and I look forward to hearing from you!Melissa Klassen
Heres their reply:
Hi Melissa, Thanks for getting in touch! At this time, we haven't announced platforms or an exact release date for Aliens: Colonial Marines. However, we hope to share more information about the game in the near future. I'm sorry I can't provide a more specific answer, but anything more precise would ruin the surprise As for your inquiry about the controls, I can't make any promises, but I've passed your feedback on to the team. Thanks again for reaching out. If there's anything else I can assist you with, be sure to let me know. Chris----------------Gearbox SoftwareCommunity Manager

Hello Moosh and wellcome to the site.

It is very unlikely that we can remap the controls in order to suit our favourite schemes; it is something very weird nowadays, and only game developers like CM STILL let us do that. We just don't understand why the rest don't let us remapping controls, and why we have to accept the pad configs they want us to use.

This has been buggin' me a lot since te days of the playstation 2; i was very used to using R2/L2 for strafe left/right and R1/L1 for look up/down since the days of the first playstation. This was one of the biggest reasons for me to stop playing shooters on the PS2 and enter the FPS on PC, because they will no longer allow me to use such control schemes.

They suck, they all suck from the first to the last one of them I know.

Greetings and wellcome again

Thanks for the welcome!

I don't know, that email sounds promising (even though he said he's not promising, hahaha) that they'll actually consider it. Its not like we want complete customisation, just what some FPS on PS3 currently offer, (Call of Duty, Killzone, Resistance, Battlefield, just to name a few) I have to say, the L2/R2 triggers on PS3 are terrible for shooters, but great for racing games, or any type of driving. I think because they are pressure sensitive, where as shooting or aiming down your sights is either yes or no, not "kinda", you can't "kinda/just a little" fire a shot, either you're shooting or you're not haha.

I've been on another ALIENS kick lately, its time for us to pop in the Anthology box set I think. I should really just forget about this game again until they release new info, but its soo hard!!!, and anticipating a game is about 60% of the fun to me, because during this time, theres really no flaws to us, you just really want to play it!

Remapping controls has always been a core feature of the games I play. They've stopped doing this now? CraZY!

I usually stick with the default controls but I understand perfectly how someone who lacks dexterity or fine motor movement in certain fingers would have problems. It seems the "bumper" buttons have become far more relavant in gaming over the last ten years. However I have always seen controller remapping as a feature, especially for first person shooters. Then again the L & R buttons will always be central to such games I am afraid. We will have to wait and see what control options are available when the game is released (sometime this decade).

I can see your points about custom controls, I say, you buy the game, you should be able to play it how you want, not how someone tells you to.

Its not my dexterity or fine motor skills, its the fact that my muscles are so weak. I have a little 1lb. weight, I have to use two hands to lift it up off the table bahahaha. but I have extremely fine motor skills, from driving a power chair for 18 years (I got my first one when I was 4)

Anyway, I feel pretty comfortable about the controls now. I have faith haha

Again, welcome MOOSH. I personally can't see why they wouldn't offer control customization. Especailly if there is going to be different race playing in the multiplayer, so ya I think you can put ur faith here.

Slightly off topic, but I actually run a computer program to help research data on muscular dystrophy so hopefully at some point we'll get some data to help people like u with that.

Awesome quote btw, you should do it a couple times, see what happens. Tempted to start my own Alien kick with the Anthology....

Hey Shadow Raptor (cool name!)

Thanks for the welcome! I think its great that you're working to help people with special needs, anything to make our daily lives just alittle bit easier, whether its helping us live more independant, or helping us recreationally is welcome, very welcome.

There is a new peripheral that a small company in my area has made, and I actually went to a demonstration, and they were really excited to see me with it, they then asked me a few questions to gather information as it would be extremely helpful for people with special needs (unfortunately I didn't feel it would be beneficial to me as of now, as I have adapted to the PS3 controller and don't play PC games anymore) I was delighted to help and gave them the best answers I could. If I ever get into PC gaming again, this is a "must have". Its a glove that handles the mouse and keyboard functions, which was way cool to try out. I can't wait to see what else they can tweak it to do. Its called the "Peregrine", heres the website: Home | The Peregrine
It felt great when I was wearing it, it was very light and my hand could actually "breathe" (it wasn't all gross and sweaty to wear haha)
Its not just for people with special needs, it was built with everyone in mind (like Splitfish's "Frag FX", or the "FragNStein" by some other company)

Also, about my signature, people already think we're weird when Mom and I start yammering on about how great Aliens is bahahaha

Hey Moosh, welcome to our site, anyway, I sent Gearbox a message a while back also about the autumn release date, and they basically told me the same thing, you know, the thanks 4 getting invloved and we cant tell u 2 many details. So Im expecting an E3 announcement and I agree on the L1 and R1 control scheme because its easier and more original.
